Introduction to the Narayani-Ganga Corridor

The Bihar has approved ₹15,450 crore for the Narayani-Ganga Corridor. It will connect Bagha which is situated in the North Western part of Bihar to Patar in Bhojpur district which is situated somewhere around the south western part of Bihar starting from the NH-727A.

The project is currently in the proposal stage which means that the Bihar government is yet to publish the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Narayani-Ganga Corridor. The Bihar Road Construction Department has requested the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) for the DPR.

The Narayani-Ganga Corridor is very ambitious project which will boost the road connectivity by providing a high speed root linking the northern southern part of the state. Officials are just waiting for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH)’s feasibility analysis and the Detailed Project Report (DPR) to get working on this road project. It will modernize Bihar’s highways and reduce the burden on other routes.

Narayani-Ganga Corridor Route

The Narayani-Ganga Corridor will pass through six districts of Bihar. As we have already discussed, it will start from Bagha (in West Champaran) and reach Patra (in Bhojpur) via the districts namely Gopalganj, Siwan, Saran, and finally Ara (also known as Bhojpur).

Interestingly, the southern end of the Narayani-Ganga corridor i.e. at Patra will be connected with Patna–Ara–Sasaram High-Speed Corridor (NH-119A). So even the connection with the neighbouring states like Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal will be well connected via Varanasi and Kolkata.

The most important in this project this that a new bridge will also be constructed over the Gandak river. This will helping getting an uninterrupted flow especially in the flood-prone regions of Bihar.

Narayani-Ganga Corridor Project Cost

This expressway will be constructed from scratch on a new alignment without distrubing the existing routes. The Narayani-Ganga corridor is expected to be a Greenfield high-speed corridor ensuring travellers’ convenience in long distance travels.

As per the proposal, the expected project cost and details are as follows:

  • Length: 225 kilometres
  • Land Acquisition Cost: ₹3,950 crore
  • Construction Cost: ₹11,500 crore
  • Total Project Cost: ₹15,450 crore
  • Type: Greenfield, high-speed expressway
  • Starting Point: Bagaha (NH-727A)
  • End Point: Patar (Bhojpur), near Ara

Districts Benefiting from the Corridor

The following six Bihari districts well benefit the most from the proposed Narayani-Ganga corridor:

  • West Champaran
  • Gopalganj
  • Siwan
  • Saran
  • Bhojpur
  • Patna (via NH-119A link)

The above mentioned reasons are currently dependent on state highways and congested NH routes. Therefore, such a major project was required for better access to market and enhancing economic activities of that region.

Integration with Other Major Routes

The southern part of the express will be intersecting the Patna–Ara–Sasaram Expressway (NH-119A) boosting the overall connection. This will allow convenient routes per Sasaram, Varanasi and Kolkata.

Notably, it is expected that in the future more feeder routes and link roads will be added along the Narayani-Ganga corridor. This will enhance the overall connectivity and have a Domino effect.

Economic and Social Impact

Such major projects bring a positive change in the economic activities of a place. The following things will happen with the construction of this Bihar expressway:

The travel time between Bagha and Bhojpur will reduce by at least 40%.

Lower transportation costs for farmers and traders will benefit them a lot.

The expressway will also boost the tourism potential. Valmiki Nagar is famously known for its tiger reserve. With easier access, people will tend to visit those regions more.

This will act as a boon while delivering emergency services in the rural and remote areas.

And lastly, it will also create more jobs – first in the construction phase and eventually after increased economic activity in the districts.

Most importantly, the new bridge over the Ganga river will ensure that the link it’s not lost during floods. The northern part of Bihar is in need of such all-weather routes.

Bihar Govt’s Overall Plan

The Bihar government is on a larger mission of developing regional expressways in Bihar. The Narayani Ganga corridor is a part of that mission itself. Apart from that, multiple new projects have been proposed or are already under construction, some of them are as follows:

  • The JP Ganga Path (Marine Drive) in Patna
  • Buxar–Bhagalpur Economic Corridor
  • Patna Ring Road project
  • Gaya–Darbhanga Expressway

Together these routes will form a cluster of expressways in Bihar which will help in boosting the educational sector and tourism sector.

Conclusion

The Narayani-Ganga corridor within an estimated cost of ₹15,450 crore is a much needed project for Bihar. It will function as a major link between north and South Bihar, while keeping in mind the flood prone areas. The new bridge will also benefit all the citizens. The expressway will reduce travel time and add to the economic development of Bihar.
