Bihar Medical Colleges See 13-Fold MBBS Seat Growth In 20 Years

Bihar medical colleges have almost doubled over the last 20 years. The total number of MBBS seats in Bihar medical colleges has been increased by 13 times. Bihar is often stereotyped to be a poor state lacking basic medical infrastructure, but the trend over the last two decades has shown appreciable growth.
The number of Bihar medical colleges has increased from 6 to 13 in the last 20 years. Apart from these government owned Bihar medical colleges, private medical colleges have also increased in Bihar.
The credit of this achievement goes to Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. Under his leadership, the PMCH (Patna Medical College and Hospital) is being developed as the world’s second largest hospital.

The Journey from 2005 to 2025
In 2005, Bihar was struggling with poor health system and insufficient medical infrastructure. Medical education options were limited for students and even after the completion of the MBBS degrees, there was a lack of hospitals. The rural areas had very less access to good quality doctors and hospitals. At that time, there were only six government Bihar medical colleges with a mere 390 MBBS seats.
Fast forward to 2025, the state has almost doubled the number of government colleges. There has been some private investment as well. The total number of MBBS is more than 5000 now. Now will discuss everything in detail.

As we have already discussed, the number of government medical colleges has almost doubled in Bihar over the last two decades. In 2005, only six such colleges were there, but now the number of Bihar government medical colleges has been increased to 13. Moreover, 22 additional colleges are under construction which will raise the total number to 34.

Rise of Private Medical Colleges in Bihar
In 2005, only two private medical colleges were present in Bihar offering just 120 MBBS seats. But now, a total of 9 private colleges are present and 1350 MBBS seats are available. Private players are also stepping in and helping in improving the medical infrastructure in Bihar.

In 2005, only 390 MBBS seats were available in Bihar but now by 2025, the total number of MBBS seats in Bihar is expected to be around 5220 which is a whopping 13 fold increase.
This increase will have a long term impact, more doctors will pursue their degrees from Bihar Medical colleges, the number of qualified medical professionals in government hospital will increase, the doctor to patient ratio will decrease and so on. The rural health Care infrastructure will also improve with the strategy with medical colleges in each Bihar district.
Future Vision : 34 Bihar Medical Colleges Soon
The Bihar is equally ambitious for the growth ahead. Currently, 22 more new medical colleges are under construction in Bihar. With the completion of their construction, the Bihar government will have a total of 34 government medical colleges in its network.
These are set up in every district of Bihar to ensure balanced development and improve accessibility for all the people instead of centralisation.
NMC (National Medical Commission) is working closely with the Bihar Government to ensure timely approvals, faculty recruitment, and infrastructure development.

- 86 new Arogya Mandirs have been approved for construction by the Bihar cabinet.

- A new AYUSH college and hospital is under construction in South Bihar
- 2901 AYUSH doctors are being recruited in rural Bihar.
