Bihar to Become ‘Weapons Hub’ With Ordnance Corridor in 5 Districts

Bihar is all set to get Ordnance Corridors (for manufacturing of military weapons) in its 5 districts. Bihar is swiftly setting up in the path of its overall economic development. Now, it is set to become India’s new “hub of weapons” and mark its presence in India’s defense sector as well.
The corridors will boost manufacturing of defence related equipments and weapons along with generating employment opportunities for the local youth. As a state with India’s youngest population, it is suitable for ordnance corridor because of the local youth that will be available as workers.

What is the Ordnance Corridor Project?
The Ordnance Factory Corridor project is aimed at developing a network of defence manufacturing facilities. They will focus on producing ammunition, rocket launchers, advanced weaponry, and machine guns. This comes after the successful functioning of the Bi-Modular Charge System plant operational in Nalanda.
This will give a powerful boost to Bihar’s image along with strengthening the central government’s ‘Make in India’ initiative.
Districts Selected for Ordnance Corridor
As per the current plan, the Ordnance Corridor will be set up in the following five districts:
- Arwal
- Jamui
- Munger
- Banka
- Kaimur
In future, these four districts of Bihar may become a part of the project :
- Sheikhpura
- Bhagalpur
- Saran
- Muzaffarpur
These areas have been chosen strategically due to there connectivity and geography.
Estimated Construction Cost
According to the available data, the total cost of developing this corridor is expected to the around ₹1500 crore. This amount is for land acquisition, infrastructure development and the establishment of manufacturing units combined together.
The cost of the weapons and ammunitions produced at these factories will be decided on the basis of cost of manufacturing and technology used.
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The development of such manufacturing units in different districts will boost the local economy which will further give a push to the overall economy of Bihar. A lot of employment opportunities will be generated from logistics to real estate to service sectors.
The local youth will be the most benefited as the manufacturing factories be need skilled, semi-skilled, and unskilled labour. Now there will be no need to migrate to other states for jobs, which was a common problem for youth of Bihar. Additionally, indirect employment will also be created in supply chains, maintenance, security, and ancillary services.
Why Bihar is Chosen?
Bihar’s geography makes it ideal for defense logistics. This is because it shares border with three Indian states and also have an International border with Nepal. The arms and ammunition manufactured in Bihar can be easily transported across the state borders or even get exported internationally.
And due to an International border, the corridor is crucial from national security viewpoint as well.
Central Government’s Approval
Bihar’s Industries Minister Nitish Mishra has already submitted a formal proposal to Defense Minister Rajnath Singh. And, fortunately the project has been preliminarily approved at the Central level. The ground work will begin as soon as the final clearances are granted.
The state government is quite confident that the central government will approved this project as soon as possible.
