Bihar EV Boom

Bihar EV Revolution : Bihar has seen a massive 113% rise in EV registrations across the state in the year 2024-25. Bihar is adopting eco-friendly transportation options with the registration of over 23,000 new electric vehicles (EVs). This remarkable growth is a result of growing awareness among the masses and the state government’s helpful policies.

Here we will be discussing about the numbers, district wise surgery and other aspects relating to rise in Bihar EV registrations. A Table of Contents is provided below for convenience in navigating through this detailed report :

Bihar EV Registrations Double in a Year

According to the official data from the Bihar Transport Department, last year in 2023–24, a total of 10,850 EVs were registered in the state. But now in the year 2024–25, over 23,096 electric vehicles have been registered in Bihar. This shows around a 113% increment from last year which is commendable! In this, mostly electric two-wheelers and personal use electric two-wheelers are seen a major surge.

This surge in Bihar EV registrations is seen as a result of collective effort under the Central Government’s initiatives like E-Amrit, which are aimed at promoting the usage of electric vehicle across India through incentives. You can also find the nearest charging stations for your EV using the E-Amrit portal.

Major Increase in Two-Wheelers EVs

Out of the total 23,096 electric vehicles, majority of them i.e. 22,133 EVs were reported to be electric two-wheelers largely including scooters and bikes. This two-wheeler section alone saw a 110% increase from last year’s 10,500 EVs and this is responsible for the overall Bihar EV surge. Especially the people from the working class are shifting towards EVs due to affordability, ease of use and low maintenance costs with the added benefit of not burdening the environment.

A major reason behind choosing the electric vehicles over the conventional petrol/diesel vehicles is to cut costs on fuel. The increasing number of Bihar EV charging stations has made it more accessible to people. Now people can easily re-charge their electric bikes and scooters without worrying about the hassle of finding EV charging stations. Environmental awareness is also playing an important role in Bihar EV demand and registrations.

175% Increment in Personal Four-Wheelers EVs

The biggest increment is indeed seen in the personal four-wheeler EV category. There has been a whopping 175% increase in that segment. Previously in 2023-24 only 350 four wheeler electric vehicles were registered in Bihar and in that too the majority where used by government officers. But in the year 2024-24, over 963 electric four-wheelers were purchased – mainly by private individuals. This is good news for Bihar EV sector as people’s mindset is shifting towards EVs as they are aware of its environmental and technical benefits.

Government awareness drives, monetary incentives about zero-emission and low maintenance costs for electric vehicles is playing a big role in instilling confidence for EVs among regular citizens. Along with this, multiple EV options and increasing number of charging stations has prompted people in considering EV options as well. The Bihar EV market is expected to grow in the upcoming years with the growing chain of EV charging stations in the state.

The Bihar EV revolution is not limited to the capital. Still, Patna leads with the highest number of EV registrations. Here we have provided a detailed breakdown for the leading districs :

Bihar Government’s Vision for EVs

Bihar’s Transport Minister Sheela Kumari announced the objective that the main goal is to change the lifestyle of people instead of just switching vehicles. She also highlighted the Bihar government’s commitment of making Bihar a leading state in adoption of electric vehicles. This will improve the quality of life and also reduce maintenance costs.

Subsequently, Bihar’s Transport Secretary Sanjay Kumar Agrawal announced an ambitious target. The Bihar Government is hoping that by 2028, around 15% of all the registered vehicles in Bihar will be electric vehicles. He also added that the government is supporting infrastructure development and EV policies for this goal. The Bihar government will continue giving incentives to the EV buyers.

Focus on Increasing EV Stations

The Bihar Government is working on increasing the availability of EV charging stations to support this increase in the number of electric vehicles. In Patna, such stations will be installed in multiple locations as follows :

  • Under flyovers
  • Near bridges
  • At public places
  • Inside residential societies
  • At petrol pumps
  • On government land

The Bihar government is providing incentives on electricity tariffs to encourage the private players in opening more charging stations. This will boost the confidence among potential buyers if they are still unsure about the availability of EV charging stations.

The Craze on EVs in Rural Areas

Interestingly, the rural areas in Bihar are not left behind as they are also participating in this  EV transition.

For instance, Motihari is shifting to EVs because of high petrol/diesel prices. Also, several battery swapping stations have been established leading to the rise in EV registrations.

Similarly, in Samastipur and Muzaffarpur, the middle class and young population including students, teachers etc are actively opting for electric vehicles. The main reason is the rising fuel prices.

For Gaya, the surge in EVs is seen in the tourism sector. People are widely opting for electric vehicles like E-rickshaws in the tourist destinations.

All these mindset shifts are expected to bring a larger impact in the automobile market of Bihar. Moreover, the Bihar Government is also effectively promoting the use of EVs via subsidies or by setting up EV charging stations and battery swapping centers.

Conclusion

The Bihar EV sector is growing faster than ever before. This is not just about numbers but also about the shift in public mindset. A vast majority of the total 23,000 new electric vehicles were purchased for personal uses. If the current growth rate continues, Bihar may become a leading market for EVs in India.
