The Darbhanga Airport is set to get upgraded in the coming months. The airport authorities have approved a slight increase in the number of daily operational flights and have also started preparation for initiating night landings at the airport. These changes will improve the overall condition of air transport in North Bihar as Darbhanga is the prominent location for the Mithila region (North Bihar).

We have compiled everything about the Darbhanga Airport in this article, including updates on flight increase, night landing preparations, new facilities, and future development goals. You can use the following Table of Contents to navigate as per your preference:

Increased Flights at Darbhanga Airport

In a recent meeting, the director of District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee (DISHA) Naveed Nazim confirmed that the number of daily flights operated by the Darbhanga airport will be increased to 22. Currently, the Darbhanga airport handles 16 daily flights.

These changes are in accordance with the latest schedule provided by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA).

Increasing the flight frequency will reduce travel burden and also provide more flexible options for the passengers. As air traffic continues to grow, this move is expected to ease the connectivity between Darbhanga and key cities across India.

Night Landing at Darbhanga Airport

Till date, the Darbhanga airport was only handling daytime operations due to infrastructural limitations but ongoing upgrades will help in making night landings a reality. This was one of the most awaited upgrades at Darbhanga Airport because it was quite an inconvenience for people. With this change, people will get more options that will suit their schedule.

An important 24-acre boundary fencing project has already been completed. The installation of the CAT-I Instrument Landing System (ILS) is underway, which will make the airport safe and reliable for being operational at night. Officials will ensure that the necessary safety checks and technical upgrades are completed soon. The airport will be able to handle flights at night by June or August 2025.

This essential upgrade will make Darbhanga airport eligible for being operational for longer hours and also help manage higher traffic by allowing more efficient use of the airport.

Demand For a Fully Equipped Ambulance

In the same meeting, demand for a fully equipped ambulance at the Darbhanga airport was proposed by the Darbhanga Airport Director. He requested that it was crucial for emergency medical needs. Responding to him, DISHA Committee Chairperson and Member of Parliament Dr. Gopalji Thakur approved his request and directed Darbhanga’s Civil Surgeon to make an ambulance available at the airport at all times.

The authorities are committed to enhancing the safety at the airport because now the airport will be handling a slightly larger volume of flights and passengers.

Expansion of Cargo Services For Local Produce

The airport is seeing growth in air cargo movement as well. This year itself, 215 tonnes of litchi were transported from Darbhanga to different cities through air routes. Now, the authorities are working on plans for transporting makhana and other famous products from the Mithila region.

The cargo handling capacity will also be increased. The Darbhanga airport has high potential for agricultural products and thus such changes were much-needed to lift the local economy.

Announcements in Maithili Language

Interestingly, the Darbhanga airport has also started making announcements in Maithili, which is the regional language of that region. This unique gesture helps instill cultural pride in the locals and also portrays a positive image in the eyes of non-resident passengers.

Two personnel have been specially deputed to ensure protocol arrangements. The waiting room’s seating capacity has been upgraded to accommodate 300 passengers. Everything is being planned to increase the comfort and convenience of the passengers.

During the DISHA meeting, MP Dr. Gopalji Thakur also asked the airport authorities to prepare a list of religious sites that can be linked with Darbhanga Airport through future flight routes. With this, they want to promote religious tourism in the Mithila region by smartly using the air connectivity offered by the airport. This initiative is a part of a broader goal under the central government that aims at integrating cultural heritage and tourism with the transportation infrastructure.

Broader Discussions in the DISHA Meeting

Apart from Darbhanga Airport developments, the DISHA meeting also made discussions on other crucial aspects such as road and highway construction, bridge development, Digital India programs, health, urban development, RTI parks, telecom, postal services, Akashvani, NABARD, khadi industries, MGNREGA, Lohia sanitation programs, and PMAY-G.

The Chairperson condemned the laziness shown by some officials in implementing central government schemes. And also promised to take strict actions if there was any negligence on the side of contractors and officers. He directed that the quality of construction work must be maintained as per the governmental norms.

Conclusion

The culturally rich Darbhanga city is set to gain more prominence with these changes. Be it the increase in the number of flights from 16 to 22, initiation of night landings and integration of new religious tourism routes – everything will bring a positive change in the infrastructure and the mindset of people when they think of Bihar.

Darbhanga Airport is no longer just a domestic terminal rather it is becoming an important point of connection for North Bihar.
