Darbhanga Metro Advances With 12 Stations and Underground Routes

The building of Darbhanga Metro project is progressing at a fast pace. Timeline of Darbhanga Metro Project Progress
- 2022: The Bihar government proposed Metro feasibility survey for Darbhanga under urban mobility scheme.
- March 2023: RITES Ltd. was appointed to prepare the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Darbhanga Metro Project.
- November 2023: Initial route alignments and corridor planning were completed.
- February 2024: Field surveys and soil testing started across selected metro routes.
- July 2024: The first draft of the DPR of Darbhanga Metro project was submitted to BSRDC.
- December 2024: Feedback and consultation was conducted on the proposed metro route.
- April 20, 2025: A review meeting held by DM Rajiv Roshan. An underground route between LNMU and Laheriasarai was proposed.
Underground Metro Station
In order to minimise traffic and disruption, the recent district level meeting was held where DM Rajiv Roshan recommended to build an underground route. Particularly the section between Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU) and Laheriasarai is selected for this because it is a VIP zone and heavy traffic jams are common here.
Darbhanga Metro Route
First Corridor :
A 12.70 km long route will be constructed in the first corridor. Under this segment, a total of 12 metro stations have been proposed. The stations will connect the most important areas of the city including educational institutions, hospitals, railway station etx. This first corridor will work as the spine of urban mobility in the city.
Route: Darbhanga Airport → Delhi Mod → Rani Bazar → PTC → LNMU → Darbhanga Railway Station → Holy Cross School → Donar Chowk → DMCH → Laheriasarai → District Court → Khajasarai → Pandasarai → ITI Ramnagar
Second Corridor :
The second corridor of Darbhanga Metro will be 9.9 kilometres long.
Route: IT Park → Ekmi Ghat → Chitragupt Nagar → F1 → F2 → Shobhan AIIMS
Third Corridor :
The third corridor is expected to connect the Darbhanga airport to AIIMS.

Multiple Meetings and Inspections
This isn’t the first major meeting held on the Darbhanga Metro project in the recent weeks. Prior to this, RITES Ltd. and BSRDC jointly conducted field inspections for both the proposed corridors. Densely populated regions, heavy traffic zones, VIP zones are given special attention.
Official statement from DM Rajiv Roshan
In a press meetings, DM Rajiv Roshan told that a series of discussions have been held with BSRDC and RITES Ltd. to address the challenges and find solutions for them. For the certain areas with congestion, that suggested making an underground section between LNMU and Laheriasarai and the rest of the Metro line will be elevated or at-grade.

Steps for Construction
According to RITES’ proposal, the construction of Darbhanga Metro is expected to be complete within five years from the date of final approval.
Project Highlights are as follows:
Each train will have two coaches both of which will be 20.5 meters long
Mixed model of elevated and underground tracks to avoid congestion
Tender process to start immediately after DPR approval
Construction will take place in phases, starting with Corridor 1
The busiest route i.e. Airport to Railway Station and LNMU to Laheriaaarau will be the initial foucs.
