Nitish Kumar Bihar pension hike
Nitish Kumar Increase Pension from ₹400 to ₹1100.

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has increased the Bihar Social Security Pension 2025 meant for elderly, widows, and differently-abled citizens. Earlier, the Social Security Pension was ₹400. In a recent public meeting in Siwan district on 20 June, he announced that now over 1.09 crore people would be getting ₹1,100 per month under the Bihar Social Security Pension 2025. This comes just a few months ahead of Bihar elections.

We have covered everything about the Bihar pension increase announcement in this article, including key details of the revised amount, eligibility of beneficiaries, official statements, political context, and the date of implementation. You can use the following Table of Contents to navigate as per your preference:

Revised Pension from July 2025

According to official data, the revised pension will be implemented from July 2025. The pension amount will be sent into the bank accounts of all the beneficiaries including senior citizens, differently-abled persons, and widows through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. This system is followed to ensure transparency and timely delivery of financial aid.

Political Context Behind the Announcement

Nitish Kumar has announced the pension at a crucial time as the state is preparing for the upcoming assembly elections. Political observers are contrasting this with the promises made by Tejaswi Yadav.

Leader of opposition Tejaswi Yadav promised ₹2,500 monthly pension for the same group of beneficiaries under the “Mai-Bahin Samman Yojana”. Tejasvi Yadav had also promised that he will provide gas cylinders at ₹500 and 200 units of free electricity for everyone if he’s voted to power. Nitish Kumar announcement of doubling the pension is seen as a counter to Tejaswi Yadav’s promise.

JD(U)’s Response to Opposition Promises

Janata Dal (United) MLC Neeraj Kumar posted a sharp message on social media platform ‘X’ responding to the opposition’s announcement. He wrote targeting Tejaswi that Nitish Kumar has increased the punishment ₹1,100 for widows, the elderly, and the disabled under the policy of development with justice on time, with respect! Attacking Tejaswi Yadav he further said “If you get a break from criticism, why not sell some of your billions in assets and start the Lalu/Tejashwi pension scheme!”

Neeraj Kumar’s comment reflects deep rivalry and it has been intensified even more due to the elections. JDU is trying to project itself as a party who delivers welfare schemes on time. Along with that, his sharp statement mentioning Tejaswi’s assets worth billion is a subtle way of pointing to their scams.

Who Benefits from the Pension Hike?

The Bihar Social Security Pension that has been now increased by Nitish Kumar will directly benefit over 1.09 crore people in Bihar. The following people will be benefited :

  • Senior citizens with no regular income
  • Widows in need of financial assistance
  • Differently-abled individuals facing economic hardships

This is a major step towards increasing the living standards of these vulnerable groups. This increase is expected to improve their condition providing them with financial stability and more dignity.

Why this Move Matters?

This move is a strategic political message pointing to the fact that Nitish Kumar’s government is committed to delivering social justice and inclusive development. And by ensuring the timely implementation from July 2025, the ruling party is expected to gain more public support. This will also work as a counter to Tejaswi Yadav promises.

Conclusion

As Bihar elections are nearing, the political tensions are increasing in the state. And this decision to increase the pension from ₹400 to ₹1,100 per month is being seen as the biggest welfare announcements prior to the Bihar elections this year. Tejasvi Yadav’s promises had raised public expectations but Nitish Kumar has somehow countered it.

Recently, the Bihar’s Sugarcane Department has announced that by the end of 2026, 9 ethanol plants will be functional in Bihar. You can read the detailed information here.
