India’s 2nd Largest Cricket Stadium – Patna’s Moin-ul-Haq

The Moin-ul-Haq cricket stadium in Patna will be redeveloped into a world class cricket stadium. It will be India’s second largest cricket stadium second only to Narendra Modi stadium in Gujarat. Bihar is gradually emerging as a sports hub for India. After the renovation, Patna’s Moin-ul-Haq cricket stadium will be capable of hosting major National and International tournaments like the ICC World Cup, Champions Trophy, and IPL.

Currently, the stadium is able to host Ranji Trophy and other domestic cricket matches. But, almost 30 years ago, the stadium hosted prestigious matches like the Zimbabwe Vs Kenya World Cup and the Asian School Football Championship. The stadium will finally return in its old form after three decades.

Project Timeline

The re-developmental work of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium will be started by August 2025 with a grand foundation ceremony. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially signed a 30 year lease agreement on 10th December 2024 taking over the responsibility for the project.

The DPR Detailed Project Report for re-development was finalised by March 2025. The process of giving out the tender is now in its final stage. The construction is expected to be completed within 2-3 years and the stadium will be operational by 2027-28.

₹500 Crore Mega Project

Approximately ₹500 crores have been allocated for the redevelopment of Moin-ul-Haq stadium in Patna. Along with the cricket stadium, a multi-sport international complex will also be constructed.

The re-development of the stadium will be fully in accordance with ICC and BCCI norms eligible for hosting high profile International matches as well.

Seating Capacity and Key Features

After renovation, Moin-ul-Haq Stadium will have a seating capacity of approx 40,000-50,000 spectators, making it the second-largest stadium in India after the 132,000-capacity Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The key features of Moin-ul-Haq stadium will include:

  • Modern VIP lounges
  • ICC-standard pitch and turf
  • Digital scoreboards and lighting
  • Corporate boxes and premium hospitality zones
  • Underground parking and smart entry-exit gates

This Patna cricket stadium will provide world class experience to both the cricket players and the fans/spectators.

Dual International Grounds

The redeveloped Moin-ul-Haq stadium will include two full-size international-standard cricket grounds. These dual international grounds in the Patna cricket stadium will enable simultaneous training and matches which is an essential feature for hosting large tournaments.

The facilities for players will also include:

  • Fully equipped dressing rooms (2)
  • Gym and spa
  • Indoor practice areas and nets
  • Video analysis center
  • Seminar hall and boardroom
  • On-campus 5-star hotel and player hostel

Apart from cricket, it will also have badminton and volleyball courts. The Moin-ul-Haq cricket complex will also feature a modern clubhouse, a restaurant, and other multi-sport facilities becoming a multi-disciplinary sports hub in itself.

Major Construction Challenges

Although the project is quite ambitious, the construction will face a few challenges as well. One of the biggest challenges the underground metro station being built under a section of the stadium. The project will need coordination between the authorities responsible for the construction of the metro and the stadium planners to be successful.

Apart from this, Kadamkuan police station and SAI (Sports Authority of India) training center are currently existing on the stadium grounds. They will have to be fully located before the construction begins. The project will be carried out in different phases so that all the above mentioned obstacles are already cleared.

Future Of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium

Bihar Cricket Association (BCA) President Rakesh Tiwary stated that after the read development of the stadium, it will be able to host International matches and also IPL matches potentially. This will be a massive boost for Bihar’s tourism sector.

The annual cost for maintenance of the stadium is estimated to be around ₹15 – ₹20 crores. According to the project officials, the maintenance cost will be managed by BCA and private operators through a revenue-sharing model.

Conclusion

The transformation of Moin-ul-Haq Stadium marks a significant development in Bihar’s sports infrastructure. Upon completion, the stadium will not only serve as a sporting complex, but it will also represent the essence of New Bihar – focus on development and infrastructure.

From hosting international matches to falling to domestic cricket events, the Moin-ul-Haq Stadium has gone through a lot of ups and downs. But now finally, it will achieve it’s charm again when it will be ready for global tournaments. This also shows the evolution of Bihar.
