Chunapur Airport Construction in Final Phase
The runaway and civil enclave are being constructed in Chunapur near Purnia main city. A high level review meeting was held recently in which senior government officials confirmed that the Chunapur Airport will be ready for inauguration by August 2025 next month. Construction work on the runway, access roads and other infrastructure is in its final stages now.
Purnia Airport Runway Will be Longest in Bihar
The biggest highlight of this airport at Chunapur is its runway which will span over 11,400 feet (approx. 3,475 meters). This makes it longer than the existing ones are Patna, Gaya and Darbhanga and hence, the airport with the longest runway in the state. Due to this, the Purnia Airport will be able to handle direct flights from major metro cities. Also, it will be Bihar’s fourth operational airport.
Patna’s Jayprakash Narayan Airport runway has been criticised for being shorter than the optimal length. Thus the Purnia Airport will be a game-changer for handling aur traffic specially in North Bihar. The government officials are also discussed on expanding the runway length of Patna Airport. You can access the detailed land report here. Apart from this, the Bihta airport which is under construction right now, is also getting merged with the Patna airport for handling flights optimally. You can read about them here.
Air Force-Civil Aviation Coordination Underway
Purnia Airport was primarily an Air Force base. But, under the UDAN scheme, it will be open for partial civil operations as well. The Indian Air Force is working in co-ordination with the Bihar government for smooth transition into civil flight services.
Recently, a trial flight was also conducted for checking the safety, and it was successful. A review meeting was also conducted inside the airport premises. It was chaired by Bihar Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena. The details about the Purnia Airport Runway, aprons, approach roads, and passenger facilities were discussed and the main access route was finalized. At this pace, it is expected that the airport will be ready for inauguration by the next month.
Massive Boost for Seemanchal Region
The launch of this airport was very essential for the Seemanchal region of Bihar. The region has been deprived of air travel options from the last decades. Citizens had to travel to main cities for boarding a flight. Once the Purnia Airport gets operational, the people from Purnia, Araria, Kishanganj, and Katihar will be benefited. They will not longer have to travel to Patna of Bagdogra for flights.
The Seemanchal region is the most-backward in Bihar and therefore this was necessary to support emergency services. The airport will also give a boost to the economic development of the region.
Conclusion
As the construction work is reaching the final stages, people’s excitement is growing. The Chunapur airport runway is the longest in Bihar and also, it is the fourth operational airport of Bihar, so people are even more excited for the inauguration. Let’s hope for the timely completion of the project.
