Bihar Govt’s New Industrial Strategy

The Bihar government is preparing for a major transformation and its industrial policy under the leadership of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The new industrial policy is aimed at creation of special industrial zones in Bihar which will be specific to certain product and resources. These special industrial zones will not focus on growing the whole state from one approach, rather it aims at understanding the special privilege of each area and harness that potential effectively. This approach will help in creating sustainable local industries without much hassle.

Bandana Preyashi, who is the Industries Secretary, announced that the new industrial policy is in its final stages. She also stated that the Bihar government will set up the special industrial zones in Bihar according to the potential of each area/district. These SIZs will complement the local produce, handicrafts and skills.

Bihar Business Connect 2024 In Brief

The Bihar business Connect Summit was held in December 2024. More than 423 companies participated in this landmark event and the investment amount of around ₹1.81 lakh crores was proposed for special industrial zones in Bihar. The investment was specifically aimed at several sectors such as food processing, renewable energy, infrastructure, pharmaceuticals and so on. This overwhelming response and success of the Bihar Business Connect 2024 is helping in the creation of the SIZs in Bihar.

What Are Special Industrial Zones (SIZs)?

A Special Industrial Zone (SIZ) is a designated area designed in order to help industries grow. These are set up by the government with the main aim of attracting investments and luring new industries to be set up in these areas. These areas feature better roads, better electricity facilities, tax benefits and evasions with easier rules for runing and starting a business. These are a wonderful solution to create jobs and boost the local economy. And with the creation of special industrial zones in Bihar, the government is hoping for the overall economic development.

What special about the special industrial zones in Bihar is that they are not like the conventional industrial parks or SEZs (Special Economic Zones). The SIZs in Bihar will be customised according to a specific product or industry as per the districts’ natural privilege.

“The special industrial zones in Bihar will be well-planned and focused on specific products. We want leverage local strengths to bring in investment and keep industries running successfully.” — Bandana Preyashi

The SIZs will be prioritised and gain additional support for better infrastructure and helpful policies. For example the areas known for toy making will be converted into a manufacture hub to support the local artisans and boost their income.

For instance, the Special industrial zones in Bihar will include :

Toy and plastic manufacturing hubs in Begusarai and West Champaran districts of Bihar.

Pharmaceutical manufacturing hub in Hajipur of Vaishali district.

Other Bihar districts are under review and the detailed development plan will be made after discussions and feedback from local industries.
